Katharina Kiening’s artistic practice unfolds in literary, photographic, and drawing-based forms that exist between analytical observation and surreal imagination. Her focus lies in an atmospheric, often fragmentary mode of working, shaped by questions of perception and memory.
With a background in Literature and Cultural Studies, she has been active in various areas of Salzburg’s cultural scene since 2016. At the end of 2022, she began presenting her previously private artistic and literary work to the public. Since then, her work has appeared in numerous literary and art magazines, been exhibited in galleries, and received the Georg-Trakl-Förderungspreis für Lyrik, a literature award for poetry from the State of Salzburg. It has also been supported by an EU travel grant and an artist-in-residence grant from the City of Salzburg.
Since 2025, she has been a member of the Austrian Writers’ Association Podium and a board member of the literature and art association archipel – Verein für Kunst, Theorie und Literatur.
