Katharina Kiening works at the intersection of literature, photography, and drawing, with select examples presented on this website. Her artistic practice moves between analytical observation and surreal imagination, characterized by an atmospheric, often fragmentary approach.
With a background in Literature and Cultural Studies, she has been active in Salzburg’s cultural scene since 2016. In late 2022, she began presenting her previously private artistic and literary work publicly. Since then, her work has appeared in numerous literary and art magazines, been exhibited in galleries, and received the Georg-Trakl-Förderungspreis für Lyrik, a literary award for poetry from the State of Salzburg. Her practice has also been supported by an EU travel grant and an artist-in-residence grant from the City of Salzburg.
Her writing explores memory, perception, and relational experience. Observations and fragments intertwine to create fluid textual landscapes in which time, space, and identity remain in constant flux. In her photographic work, she primarily investigates site-specific approaches, treating urban spaces as resonant fields. Fleeting moments are arranged into sequences and woven into open narrative structures. And in her drawing series, abstract forms emerge through repetition and variation, producing a narrative that is both fragile and continuous.
Since 2025, she has been a member of the Austrian Writers’ Association Podium and serves on board of the literature and art association archipel – Verein für Kunst, Theorie und Literatur.
